Flexible manufacturing systems for transmission housings differentiate to cylinder block and cylinder head only in the required amount of operations.
In such manufacturing systems the machines are often working in a parallel configuration. SPC stations are standard as well as the tracking of the work pieces with a data matrix code, RFID tags or simple part marking. Adapter plate concepts are very selcomly used for these large components based on their interfering contours and as a result manufacturing flexibility is significantly reduced.
The biggest challenge in manufacturing of transmission housings is the material handling. The work pieces, based on their geometry cannot roll on conveyors, but must be transported on work piece carriers (pallets).
